The better approach for professional headshots in 2026 is still a photographer, but a shorter shoot. For use cases where visual coherence matters — a product catalog, a website with a unified aesthetic, a presentation where all illustrations should feel like they belong together — consistency is the hidden cost that the demos never mention.
The detail problem. AI images hold up at web resolution (1200px wide) and fall apart at closer inspection. Zoom in on a product shot and you'll find surfaces that don't behave like real materials, edges that blur where they should be sharp, and textures that repeat in ways physical materials don't. For digital-only use at standard web sizes, this doesn't matter. For print, large format display, or any context where someone will examine the image closely, it matters significantly.
The iteration problem. The demos show prompt-to-image as a single step. In practice, producing a business-ready image takes 3-8 iterations across generation, prompt refinement, selection, upscaling, and post-processing. The per-image cost in time is 15-45 minutes for a polished business asset. That's still faster and cheaper than traditional production for most use cases, but it's not the instant gratification the demos suggest.
What's Coming (And Whether To Wait)
The trajectory across all tools is toward better photorealism, more precise control, and faster iteration. Product shot quality will improve as models get better at material rendering and lighting physics. Headshot quality will improve as fine-tuning becomes more sophisticated. Stock replacement will continue expanding into categories that currently require real photography.
The use case that will change most dramatically in the next 12 months is product photography. Concept art: AI's strongest use case. Midjourney for mood and aesthetics. Flux for realism. DALL-E for description accuracy. Leonardo for character consistency. Stable Diffusion with ControlNet for spatial precision. This is the one context where AI generates genuine ROI that's hard to achieve any other way.
For most business users, the honest answer is: AI image generation saves money and adds specificity for moderate-stakes visual needs. It does not yet replace professional production for high-stakes visual needs. Know which category your use case falls into, choose accordingly, and stop trying to make AI product photography work for your e-commerce page. It's not there yet.
