The Knowledge Tool Stack: What to Combine
No single AI knowledge tool does everything well. Perplexity is great at synthesis but weak on recency. Google is unbeatable for local and shopping but buries useful results under SEO slop. NotebookLM is excellent for closed-corpus research but can't search the open web. RAG pipelines give you control over your own data but require actual engineering to build and maintain. The practical question isn't "which tool is best" — it's which tools to combine and, just as importantly, which to skip.
What It Actually Does
A knowledge tool stack is just the set of tools you use to find, evaluate, and synthesize information. Everyone already has one — it's called "Google and maybe Wikipedia." The question is whether layering AI tools on top makes you measurably better at turning questions into reliable answers, or just makes you feel more productive while introducing new failure modes.
After testing the tools covered in this series, here are four stacks for four different use cases. Each one is opinionated. Each one leaves things out on purpose.
The Casual Researcher Stack
For: anyone who searches the web regularly and wants better answers faster. Journalists on deadline. Marketers doing competitive research. Curious people who go down rabbit holes.
- Perplexity (free or Pro) for synthesis queries — "explain X," "compare X and Y," "summarize the state of X." This replaces the Google-then-read-five-articles workflow for questions where you want a coherent answer, not a reading list.
- Google for everything Perplexity can't do — local search, shopping, current events within the last 24 hours, navigational queries ("take me to the AWS billing page"), image and video search.
- NotebookLM for when you have a pile of documents you need to understand — uploaded reports, research papers, long articles you've saved. Upload them, ask questions, get grounded answers with citations pointing to specific passages.
That's it. Three tools. The combined cost is zero if you use Perplexity's free tier and NotebookLM's free tier, or $20/month if you want Perplexity Pro for model selection and deeper research mode. This stack handles 90% of knowledge work for 90% of people. If you're reaching for more tools, make sure you have a reason.
What you skip: Elicit and Consensus (you're not doing academic research), vector databases (you're not building a pipeline), RAG (you don't have a custom corpus that needs to be queryable). The temptation is to add tools because they exist and sound impressive. Resist it. Tools you don't use regularly are tools that clutter your workflow without improving your output.
The Professional Researcher Stack
For: grad students, academic researchers, analysts doing systematic literature reviews, anyone whose job involves reading and synthesizing large volumes of published research.
- Elicit for finding and extracting data from research papers. Its semantic search over academic literature surfaces relevant papers that keyword search on Google Scholar misses. The automated extraction — pulling sample sizes, methodologies, key findings, and limitations from papers — saves hours on literature reviews. It's not perfect, and you need to verify the extractions against the actual papers, but it gets you to 80% faster than reading every abstract manually.
- Consensus as a second opinion on the research landscape. Its "consensus meter" is reductive and should not be cited in your paper, but it's useful as a fast sanity check — if Consensus says 90% of papers support a claim, and your reading suggests otherwise, that's a signal to look deeper. Use it as a compass, not a conclusion.
- Zotero (or Mendeley, or whatever reference manager you already use) for organizing the papers you actually read. AI tools are good at finding and summarizing papers. They're bad at managing a research library over time. Keep your reference manager.
- Claude or GPT-4 for synthesis and drafting. Once you've collected and read the key papers, use a long-context LLM to help synthesize findings, identify gaps, and draft sections. Paste in your notes, the key quotes, the data tables. The model is good at pattern-matching across your collected material. It is not good at replacing the reading — if you skip reading the papers and just ask the LLM to synthesize Elicit's summaries, you'll produce something that sounds authoritative and is subtly wrong in ways only a domain expert would catch.
- NotebookLM for deep engagement with a specific set of papers. Upload the 10-15 key papers for your review, then interrogate them. "Do any of these papers address X?" "What methodologies were used across these studies?" "Where do these authors disagree?" NotebookLM's grounded answers — tied to specific passages in your uploaded documents — are more reliable than asking a general LLM the same questions.
What you skip: Perplexity (it's a web search tool, not a research tool — it'll surface blog posts alongside papers and can't filter by study type or peer review status). Google AI Overviews (actively unhelpful for academic research). Any RAG pipeline (your corpus is in Zotero and NotebookLM, not a vector database).
The Business Knowledge Stack
For: teams that need to make internal documentation — policies, processes, product specs, customer data — searchable and queryable by employees.
- A RAG pipeline built on your internal documents. This is the stack from article 10.7 — document parsing, chunking with metadata, embeddings, vector storage, retrieval, generation. LlamaIndex or LangChain as the orchestration layer. OpenAI or open-source embeddings depending on your compliance requirements. Chroma or pgvector for storage unless you're at a scale that demands Pinecone or Weaviate.
- Your existing knowledge management tool — Notion, Confluence, SharePoint, whatever — as the source of truth. The RAG pipeline reads from it. Humans write to it. The pipeline is the search layer, not the storage layer. If someone asks "what's the onboarding process" and the RAG pipeline pulls from a Confluence page that was last updated in 2023, that's a source-of-truth problem, not a pipeline problem. Keep your docs current in the tool your team already uses.
- Perplexity or Google for external context. Internal knowledge bases answer "what do we do." External search answers "what should we do" or "what are others doing." The two are complementary.
What you skip: NotebookLM (good for individuals, awkward for teams — no shared workspaces with proper access controls as of early 2026 [VERIFY]). Elicit and Consensus (these are academic research tools, not business knowledge tools). Elaborate multi-model pipelines with agents and chain-of-thought reasoning (you need search and synthesis, not an autonomous agent — the complexity isn't worth it for most internal knowledge use cases).
The Content Creator Stack
For: writers, bloggers, newsletter authors, content marketers — anyone who researches topics and produces written content.
- Perplexity for initial research. "What are the main arguments for and against X?" "What happened with Y?" "Summarize the current state of Z." Perplexity gives you the landscape in one shot. Its citations give you the sources to read deeper. Start here, not with a blank Google search.
- Google for fact-checking and source verification. After Perplexity gives you the synthesis, Google the specific claims. Find the primary sources. Check the dates. Confirm the numbers. This step is non-negotiable if you're publishing under your name. AI synthesis is a starting point for research, not a substitute for it.
- Claude or GPT-4 for drafting assistance. Not for writing the piece — for helping you structure it, identify gaps in your argument, or rephrase a paragraph that isn't working. The model is a writing tool, not a writing replacement. If you're using it to generate entire articles from Perplexity's research, you're producing content slop and the audience can tell.
- A read-later tool — Pocket, Instapaper, Readwise, even a bookmarks folder — for collecting the sources you actually want to reference. The content creator's problem isn't finding information. It's managing the information you've found across dozens of open tabs.
What you skip: Elicit and Consensus (unless you're writing about scientific topics, and even then only for the research phase). NotebookLM (useful if you're writing a book-length project based on a fixed set of sources, overkill for articles and newsletters). RAG pipelines (you're writing content, not building a search product).
What The Demo Makes You Think
Tool companies want you to use their tool for everything. Perplexity wants to be your only search engine. Google wants to keep you in their ecosystem. Every tool's marketing implies it's the complete solution. None of them are. The tools that try to do everything do nothing as well as the tools that do one thing.
The biggest mistake is building a stack based on what's interesting rather than what you actually use. If you set up Elicit, Consensus, NotebookLM, a RAG pipeline, three different LLMs, and a vector database, you don't have a knowledge stack — you have a graveyard of accounts you'll forget the passwords to. A good stack has 2-4 tools you use consistently, not 8 tools you use occasionally.
The second biggest mistake is redundancy. Perplexity and ChatGPT with browsing do roughly the same thing. Elicit and Consensus overlap significantly for finding research papers. Having both in your stack means you're doing the same search twice in different interfaces. Pick one per function and commit.
What's Coming
The tools are converging. Perplexity is adding more research-depth features that overlap with Elicit. Google's AI Overviews are making Google itself more like Perplexity. NotebookLM is adding collaboration features that push it toward business use cases. Claude and GPT keep expanding their context windows, reducing the need for RAG pipelines at smaller scales.
In 12 months, these stacks will probably look simpler, not more complex. The casual researcher stack might just be Perplexity — if it improves its recency and local search, there's less reason to bounce to Google. The professional researcher stack might consolidate around whichever platform — Elicit, Consensus, or a new entrant — best integrates paper search, extraction, and synthesis into one workflow. The business stack will still need a RAG pipeline, but the pipeline will be easier to build as the orchestration frameworks mature.
The tools that survive will be the ones that do one thing significantly better than a general-purpose LLM with web access. That's the competitive bar. If Claude with a long context window can do what your tool does just by pasting in the relevant text, your tool doesn't have a moat. The tools with moats are the ones with proprietary data (Elicit's paper index), unique capabilities (NotebookLM's source-grounded answers), or infrastructure advantages (Google's local search index). Everything else is a feature, not a product.
The Verdict
Start with the casual stack — Perplexity, Google, NotebookLM — and add tools only when you hit a limitation the stack can't handle. If you're doing academic research, add Elicit. If you need to make internal docs searchable, build a RAG pipeline. If you're creating content, add a dedicated writing tool. Every addition should solve a specific problem you're actually having, not a problem you theoretically might have.
The knowledge tool landscape is noisy. New tools launch weekly. Most of them are thin wrappers around the same underlying models with different UIs. The signal through the noise: retrieve well, synthesize well, cite well. Any tool that does those three things earns a place in your stack. Any tool that doesn't is a distraction with a subscription fee.
